Handicapping the Heisman Trophy race

Want to determine the most likely recipient of this season's Heisman Trophy? The procedure is rather simple: Pore over statistics, identify the most productive players, consider their team's chances for success and make a list of the top, say, half-dozen candidates.

Now, throw it away.
Recent trends show the most attractive preseason Heisman candidates aren't likely to win the coveted trophy.

In each of the past three seasons, the eventual recipient -- Alabama tailback Mark Ingram, Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow -- wasn't one of the leading preseason candidates.

Bradford was the only eventual winner listed on the preseason top 10 contenders list compiled by heismanpundit.com, a website devoted to all things Heisman related. He was ninth in the preseason.

"Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford were well-known [before they won], but Ingram completely came out of nowhere," Heismanpundit.com publisher Chris Huston said.

Before Ingram, the last Heisman-winning running back to rush for fewer than 1,700 yards was Ohio State's Archie Griffin in 1975.

"I chalk up a lot of it to the new media age and all the social networking," Huston said. "A big factor in Ingram winning was [Nebraska defensive tackle] Ndamukong Suh's emergence and taking votes away from [Texas quarterback] Colt McCoy. When Suh's candidacy took off, it cost McCoy the Heisman."

McCoy, Bradford and Tebow were preseason front-runners in '09 largely because they were the three finalists in '08.
The preseason front-runners in '08 were Tebow, Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells and Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel. In '07, USC quarterback John David Booty, Arkansas running back Darren McFadden and West Virginia running back Steve Slaton were the perceived leading contenders.

Though Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, the eventual recipient, was ranked third on preseason lists in 2006, he still was considered a dark-horse candidate behind Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn and Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson.

Thus, while Ingram surely will be considered the best bet to capture another Heisman and join Ohio State's Griffin as the only two-time winner, don't count out anybody.

Especially don't count out sophomores. Each of the past three winners was a second-year player.

This season's 10 leading Heisman candidates, listed alphabetically:
RB John Clay, Wisconsin: If Clay -- who rushed for 1,517 yards last season despite balky ankles -- has a big season, the Badgers will, too.

RB Noel Devine, West Virginia: In each of the past two seasons, Devine has increased his production over the previous season. If he betters last season's 1,465-yard performance, he'll be a major contender.

RB Mark Ingram, Alabama: Things are changing in the Heisman race. The past three recipients have been sophomores. Last season, a defensive tackle was a legitimate candidate. The time for another two-time recipient may be drawing near. A big game against Penn State in September could mean Ingram will join Griffin as a two-time winner.

QB Case Keenum, Houston: Keenum threw for 5,671 yards and 44 touchdowns last season, and all his surrounding skill-position talent is back. Talk of a 6,000-yard season isn't that far-fetched.

RB Dion Lewis, Pittsburgh: He closed out a stellar freshman season (1,799 yards, 17 touchdowns) with four consecutive 150-yard games.

QB Ryan Mallett, Arkansas: The Razorbacks figure to be better than they were last season, and Mallett should post gaudy stats in his second season in coach Bobby Petrino's quarterback-friendly offense.

QB Kellen Moore, Boise State: He throws a lot of touchdown passes (64) and few interceptions (13), and his team has lost just once in two seasons with him as the starter. He could make a major statement in the opener against Virginia Tech.

QB Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State: The improving dual-threat quarterback is leading a team with a real shot at going unbeaten.

RB Jacquizz Rodgers, Oregon State: Rodgers produces as a runner and receiver. In '09 he rushed for 1,440 yards and added 522 receiving yards.

RB Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech: Second-year players are hot. Williams is a highlight waiting to happen. As a redshirt freshman last season, he had 23 runs that covered at least 20 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown gallop against Alabama.

Others to consider
(listed alphabetically)
QB Matt Barkley, USC
WR Ryan Broyles, Oklahoma
QB Ricky Dobbs, Navy
WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame
QB Blaine Gabbert, Missouri
QB Jacory Harris, Miami
RB LaMichael James, Oregon
QB Jerrod Johnson, Texas A&M
QB Jake Locker, Washington
QB Christian Ponder, Florida State

Iran inaugurates nation's first unmanned bomber

By NASSER KARIMI, Associated Press Writer Nasser Karimi, Associated Press Writer – Sun Aug 22, 7:14 pm ET
TEHRAN, Iran – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday inaugurated the country's first domestically built unmanned bomber aircraft, calling it an "ambassador of death" to Iran's enemies.

The 4-meter-long drone aircraft can carry up to four cruise missiles and will have a range of 620 miles (1,000 kilometers), according to a state TV report — not far enough to reach archenemy Israel.

"The jet, as well as being an ambassador of death for the enemies of humanity, has a main message of peace and friendship," said Ahmadinejad at the inauguration ceremony, which fell on the country's national day for its defense industries.

The goal of the aircraft, named Karrar or striker, is to "keep the enemy paralyzed in its bases," he said, adding that the aircraft is for deterrence and defensive purposes.

The president championed the country's military self-sufficiency program, and said it will continue "until the enemies of humanity lose hope of ever attacking the Iranian nation."

Iran launched an arms development program during its 1980-88 war with Iraq to compensate for a U.S. weapons embargo and now produces its own tanks, armored personnel carries, missiles and even a fighter plane.

Iran frequently makes announcements about new advances in military technology that cannot be independently verified.

State TV later showed video footage of the plane taking off from a launching pad and reported that the craft traveled at speeds of 560 miles per hour (900 kilometers per hour) and could alternatively be armed with two 250-pound (113.4-kilogram) bombs or a 450-pound (204.12-kilogram) guided bomb.

Iran has been producing its own light, unmanned surveillance aircraft since the late 1980s.

The ceremony came a day after Iran began to fuel its first nuclear power reactor, with the help of Russia, amid international concerns over the possibility of a military dimension to its nuclear program.

Iran insists it is only interested in generating electricity.

Referring to Israel's occasional threats against Iran's nuclear facilities, Ahmadinejad called any attack unlikely, but he said if Israel did, the reaction would be overwhelming.

"The scope of Iran's reaction will include the entire the earth," said Ahmadinejad. "We also tell you — the West — that all options are on the table."

Ahmadinejad appeared to be consciously echoing the terminology used by the U.S. and Israel in their statements not ruling out a military option against Iran's nuclear facilities.

On Friday, Iran also test-fired a new liquid fuel surface-to-surface missile, the Qiam-1, with advanced guidance systems

Iran condemns possible US military action

By EDITH M. LEDERER, Associated Press Writer Edith M. Lederer, Associated Press Writer – Wed Aug 18, 3:58 pm ET
UNITED NATIONS – Iran took its case against the United States to the United Nations on Wednesday and strongly condemned the top U.S. military chief for saying military action remains a possibility if the country develops nuclear weapons.
Iran's acting U.N. ambassador Eshagh Alehabib claimed in letters circulated to the secretary-general and presidents of the Security Council and General Assembly that Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other U.S. officials and lawmakers "threatened" to use military action under the "totally false" pretense that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.
Mullen said earlier this month that the U.S. military has a plan to attack Iran, although he thinks a military strike is probably a bad idea. Still, he said the risk of Iran developing a nuclear weapon is unacceptable and he reiterated that "the military option" remains on the table.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Wednesday that Iran's response to an attack would not be limited to the region, suggesting Iran would target U.S. interests beyond the Persian Gulf.
"It's unlikely that they (U.S.) will make such a stupidity (to attack Iran) but all must know that if this threat is carried out, the field of the Iranian nation's confrontation will not be only our region," Khamenei told state TV. "The area of confrontation will be much wider."
He also said there will be no talks with the U.S. under the shadow of threats.
Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters in Iran, apparently was referring to recent calls by the U.S. and other key powers for Iran to resume talks on its nuclear program following the U.N. Security Council's recent vote imposing a fourth set of sanctions against the country for refusing to halt uranium enrichment.
The U.S. and some of its allies accuse Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to build nuclear weapons. Iran has denied the allegations, saying its nuclear program is geared merely toward generating electricity, not bombs.
Alehabib said the United States was using threatening language that violates international law and the U.N. Charter and goes against "global efforts to strengthen regional and international peace and security." He reiterated that Iran "would not hesitate to act in self-defense to respond to any attack."
Khamenei said negotiations would be possible if the U.S. stops making threats against Iran, and he set conditions for it.
"If the U.S. puts aside threats, sanctions and its superpower display and refuses to set goals for the talks, then there will be a possibility of talks. But under the present conditions and given the threats and pressures, no talks with be held at all," Khamenei was quoted as saying.
Khamenei also said Iran will not give up its nuclear activities.
"The U.S. and some Western countries have no logic in this issue and the Islamic Republic of Iran will never give up the cycle of nuclear fuel," state TV quoted him as saying.
The U.S. and five key powers — Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany — have been trying to revive talks with Iran on its nuclear program and have offered a package of incentives if Tehran freezes uranium enrichment and resumes negotiations.
In late July, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said nuclear talks with the six powers would start in early September, regardless of conditions he set in June, but Khamenei's comments raise questions about the timetable. Iran has also said it wants to revive separate talks involving Tehran, Washington, Paris and Moscow on a fuel swap for Tehran's research nuclear reactor.

Log in with a secondary account alias. Not a main ID. This simply means go into your account info, and create an alias.
After you have successfully logged in with a secondary alias, there are some commands you enter. You send these
just like you are sending text to the chatroom. These commands are as follows (including what they do):
+ /noipaddr - This will Force your IP address closed from incoming connections.
When this is successfully entered you will get a msg in chat that looks like this.
*** Forced IpAddr is off
+/noudp - This will block all the ports that yahelite uses for file transfer/webcam services. Msg will look like this.
*** Ports blocked 5000:Yes 5001:Yes 5002:Yes 5003:Yes 5004:Yes 5005:Yes
5006:Yes 5007:Yes 5008:Yes 5009:Yes

+/noact - This is probably the most important of all these commands. What it does is deactivates the account
temporarily. CAUTION! This will stop all IMs and stop all incoming chat msgs. (you wont see chat txt)
There are ways to see chat but it involves /fork and logging in another account. If you have successfully
used the /noact command you will see the following msg.
*** 'YourAccountID' is now deactivated, use (Use /act YourAccountID to activate it again.)
If you arent on a secondary Alias, you will see the following msg. Which means it isn't working right.
*** /noact can not change activation status of the Account Main ID
